Well over a month in the making, construction of the Mackenzie River ice crossing officially began Nov. 18 and the road opened to light traffic as of Nov. 30.

It was a chilly Dec. 11 afternoon, but that didn’t stop the townspeople of Inuvik from taking part in their annual Christmas parade. Streets were lined with candy as floats and town vehicles moved down Mackenzie Road in the few moments of light available. Donovan Arey’s elf family float won first prize in the town’s contest.

When a mob descended on Washington D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021, killing five people in the process, it was noted by observers that had the rioters belonged to any other demographic than white Republicans, the National Guard would have been called in and the day would have turned out very differently.
