The towns of Hay River and Fort Smith have submitted a joint intervenor application to contest the NWT Power Corporation’s general rate application for a sharp increase in prices.

The Town of Hay River reported that evacuation orders remained in place for residents of Vale Island, West Channel and Paradise Gardens as of noon, Monday.

All properties along the Hay River were given a precautionary evacuation alert on Sunday due to increasing risk of flooding.

Residents of Paradise Gardens have been ordered to evacuate due to flood risk, according to a Sunday notice from the Town of Hay River.

Electricity in Hay River and the K’atlodeeche Reserve went out just before midnight on Sunday but was restored within an hour.

K’atlodeeche First Nation saw some of the worst of spring break-up over the weekend as flooding forced the entire band to evacuate, May, 8.

Vale Island residents were ordered to evacuate on Sunday as ice blocks continued through town and water levels remained extremely high.

West Channel and Vale Island residents were heading into Saturday evening under an evacuation order from earlier in the morning in response to large chunks of ice drifting through town.

Police are looking for help in finding suspects involved in the theft of fuel from a school bus this week.
