Indigenous Futures: Rooted and Ascending and Moose Skin Dome are new exhibits

Known by many as Welders Daughter, Yellowknife-based Karen Single Band — led by singer Karen Novak — is getting ready to once again bring music and shows to the North.

Twenty-one Indigenous artists are adding colour to the city through six murals.

Inuvik closed out the Great Northern Arts Festival July 15 by transforming the Chief Jim Koe performance pavilion into a full-out catwalk. Showing off the designs of Eleanor Elias, Catherine Cockney, Alice Hunter, Ashley Okreinec, Amanda Lennie, Kimberly Ruben and Vanessa Allison Kimiksana, 13 models made two trips around the stage for the cheering crowd. Hairstyling was by Alecia Lennie and makeup was designed by Charity Thrasher Gruben.

A Hay River supergroup of sorts was thrown together for the sixth installment of the Hay Days festival on July 17 at the Fisherman’s Wharf.

Female artists from Yellowknife were among the talented acts to entertain the unleashed post-COVID masses at Folk on the Rocks (FOTR) over the weekend.

The Hay Days Festival UNWOUND had another big draw of people to the Fisherman’s Wharf in their fourth Saturday into its 12- week program this summer.

The long-awaited Folk on the Rocks weekends opens today, Friday July 16, with several acts throughout the day leading into the main festival lineup on Saturday and Sunday.

A Yellowknife musician releasing his first album this week, is pledging all proceeds generated in the first year be donated to the Residential Schools Survivors Society – a BC organization that provides counselling and cultural support services to residential school survivors and their families.

It has been a quiet 15 months without the sounds of strumming, drumming and kitchen party singalongs echoing through the streets of Yellowknife.
