Yellowknife’s Consumer Price Index climbs in September

Yellowknife’s All-Items Consumer Price Index last month jumped nearly 3 per cent from September 2017, says the NWT Bureau of Statistics.

The index, used to gauge changes in pricing levels for consumer goods and services, spiked 2.9 per cent in September compared to the same month last year, according to a new report from the bureau.

The increase was partly fueled by big price spikes for transportation and shelter, which rose by 5.1 per cent and 5.0 per cent, respectively.

Gas prices swelled by nearly 30 per cent from last September. The bulk of that growth occurred in April, stated the report.

The price of electricity, however, decreased by 2.1 per cent from September 2017.

Yellowknife’s increase is higher than Canada’s average, which jumped 2.2 per cent from last year.
