Yellowknife structure built for homeless individuals disappears

Platform for tents is no longer on Commissioner's land

Almost a month ago, a wooden platform popped up across the street from the Niven Gate sign on 48 Street. Yellowknife residents built it so homeless people could have a level place to erect their tents.

Now, it's gone. All that's left are a dozen or so wooden planks and what appears to be a portable camping mattress.

There are also many lighters left on the ground.

When asked, Mayor Rebecca Alty said she hadn't heard of the platform disappearing. That said, the wooden structure was on Commissioner's land, so responsibility for it lies with the territorial government and not the municipality.

NNSL Media is seeking comment from the GNWT.
