Woman arrested in Yellowknife courthouse

A woman who supported accused firearm thief Toufic Chamas during a bail hearing last week was arrested by RCMP before leaving the Yellowknife courthouse, a witness told Yellowknifer.

Chamas, 23, was granted bail by Justice of the Peace Ian McCrae on Nov. 7.

A court-ordered ban prevents the publication of McCrae's reasoning for the release, as well as any evidence presented during the hearing.

Following the decision, two Mounties handcuffed the woman as she made her way to the Yellowknife courthouse exit, the witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

“A female was arrested at the courthouse by members of the Northwest Territories RCMP Federal Investigations Unit pursuant to an ongoing investigation,” confirmed RCMP spokesperson Marie York-Condon in an email Friday.

The woman was not charged and has since been released from custody, stated police.

Her identity won't be released as she doesn't face any criminal charges.

Chamas was arrested on Oct. 19 after Mounties say they recovered a handgun and ammunition – linked to the Thanksgiving weekend theft of guns and other items from a Rivett Crescent home – during a traffic stop in the city.

He faces seven firearm charges and a host of recognizance breaches in connection with the theft.

“The RCMP is one part of the justice system and supports the decisions of those involved in the judicial system,” wrote York-Condon in an email to Yellowknifer following the ordered release of Chamas.
