WATCH VIDEO: Self-isolating and ice fishing for burbot at night

Night fishing

Tired of Covid-19 news? Watched your last episode of Tiger King? Then perhaps it's time to take a night off from home and hit the hot burbot bite at a lake near you - while practising social distancing, of course.

Bryce Styan, a Yellowknife videographer, musician, working-from-home-government employee and angler, met me for a night of ice fishing on Prelude Lake, Sunday night. Burbot are willing dance partners this time of year on most deep lakes as the sun sets and the fish move shallow to feed on sculpins and sticklebacks.

Burbot, often called loche, make for an excellent meal - poor man's lobster they call it - but don't forget to purchase a new fishing online licence. The 2020 season began April 1.

It was surprisingly cold Sunday night despite the nice weather earlier in the day. Normally, we would've set up a tent with a heater but not in this new coronavirus world. So what to do but fish under a bright, white moon and reel in all the fish.
