SPORTS CHECK: Yellowknife versus the country

It's Canada Soccer Club Nationals this week and Yellowknife has plenty of skin in the game when it comes to the competitions.

The Yellowknife Bay Soccer Club, known as the Sundogs, have two teams in Surrey, B.C., this week for the Toyota U-17 Cup and it all gets underway this morning. The girls will take on Suburban FC from Nova Scotia in its first round-robin contest before taking on the Sherwood Park Phoenix from Alberta tomorrow. The boys are in action this morning against Vaughan SC from Ontario and again tomorrow versus the Feildians Athletic Association from Newfoundland and Labrador.

No matter where they finish, both teams will advance to the seeding round, which starts on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Yk Galaxy men's squad is in Saskatoon for the Challenge Trophy, the men's national championship. They will get going tomorrow afternoon against Royal Beauport from Quebec and will follow that up against teams from Manitoba, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador in the coming days.

They will start the seeding round this coming Monday and you can see the next edition of Yellowknifer for an update on all of the teams' progress.

Kevin Koe falls short

The first Grand Slam of Curling event is in the books and it isn't Kevin Koe with the trophy above his head.

The Elite 10 was held in Chatham, Ont., with Koe and his rink of B.J. Neufeld, Colton Flasch and Ben Hebert managed to get into the playoffs of the men's event, but fell at the quarter-final stage to Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario by three ends. Koe finished the round-robin with a record of three wins and one loss, the loss coming to Reid Carruthers of Manitoba.

Scoring in the event was done differently than others as its done by a matchplay system where ends won as opposed to points scored determines who wins.

Ultimate, anyone?

The indoor season for the Yellowknife Ultimate Club is about to get underway and the club is giving people a chance to try the sport out.

There's an open clinic happening at the Fieldhouse this coming Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. and is open to anyone 16 years of age and older. The evening will include a refresher on the rules along with work on skills and a scrimmage.

Indoor shoes are required along with a white or dark-coloured shirt.
