SPORTS CHECK: Volleyball coaches announced

Team NT's volleyball coaches for the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games have now been confirmed.

NWT Volleyball announced on Sept. 25 that Jeannie Mathison and Darren Horn will lead the boys and girls teams respectively when the Games happen in Swift Current, Sask., next August. Mathison will be at the helm of a territorial team for the first time since 2011, when she coached the Western Canada Summer Games girls team that year. For Horn, he's fresh off leading the 2018 Arctic Winter Games boys team to a silver ulu in Hay River this past March.

Mike Mathison will be the assistant coach for the boys while Mike Thompson will serve as the assistant coach for the girls.

One more step to the end

The golfing season for 2018 in Yellowknife is about to take another step toward conclusion.

The driving range at the Yellowknife Golf Club is now out of commission having shut down this past Monday. That follows the closure of the clubhouse on Sept. 16, meaning no more food service, but the pro shop is still open and is scheduled to remain open until Oct. 7.

Shaun Morris, the club's president, said the course is still open for people to play a round if they want to but the snow fences are going up around the course and the final day of play is scheduled for Oct. 7.

Broomball clinics set to begin

The Yellowknife Broomball Association is getting set to start its 2018-2019 season and that means shoring up the ranks.

There are free ice times coming up for new players to try the sport out or for players looking to get in some work before everything begins. The first one will be at the Yk Community Arena this coming Wednesday from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. and is co-ed.

Equipment will be provided to those who don't have any.
