SPORTS CHECK: Volleyball camp on the horizon

The Crush Volleyball Club is getting set for its upcoming season and there's something new in store this time around.

Three groups will be on the court for the club going into this season: 16U and 17U boys along with a brand new14U girls program.

The team will be having development camps and selections for all three teams this coming weekend at Weledeh Catholic School and the boys will be first up on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The girls camp will be on Sunday also from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Weledeh.

Anyone who wants to try out must be registered with NWT Volleyball. You can get in touch with Jeannie Mathison for the details.

Arena workers go to school

Arenas around the territory are going to be busy, if they aren't already, so people need to know how to operate everything properly.

The School of Community Government, which is under the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, is at the Multiplex this week running its Arena Level I and II course. Everything began on Tuesday and consists of sessions on such things as the making, marking, painting and maintenance of natural and artificial ice surfaces.

Basic refrigeration theory is also included if there are students who are working with artificial ice in their arenas.

The course is scheduled to run until Sunday.

Shooters at the ready

It's been a few years but the NWT Federation of Shooting Sports will be hosting its NWT Action Pistol Tournament at the Yellowknife Shooting Club this weekend.

An action pistol match consists of an obstacle course where shooters locate different targets and engage them in the fastest time.

John Dzurka, the match director for the event, said a combination of time and score will be the determining factor as to who wins.

Competitors from Yellowknife and Hay River are scheduled to hit the range, he added, and it all gets underway at 9 a.m on Saturday.
