SPORTS CHECK: Team North going strong

The 2018 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships are well underway in Membertou, N.S., and Team North is in with a chance on both sides of the gender spectrum.

The girls opened up with a 5-5 tie against Eastern Door and North on Sunday and were set to take on Saskatchewan on Monday afternoon. They wrap up the round-robin against B.C. today and New Brunswick tomorrow.

The boys, meanwhile, opened up its tournament on Sunday with a 6-2 loss to Ontario North but bounced back with a 6-4 win over Eastern Door and North on Monday. They took on Ontario South yesterday and finish up the round-robin with a game against Manitoba, the defending boys champions.

The spring action begins

The Yk Multisport Club's 2018 spring/summer schedule gets going this weekend with the Mother's Day Run happening on Sunday.

Everything will start and finish at Somba K'e Park and there will be several distances for runners to tackle from the 150-metre tyke race right up to the 10-km run for adults. The youth races will start at 9:45 a.m. followed by the adult races at 10 a.m. The event will be a fundraiser for the Yellowknife Women's Society.

The deadline to get in on the action is Saturday at 6 p.m. and you can sign up at the Zone 4 website.

Meeting of the minds

The Yellowknife Adult Soccer League will be getting together for its annual general meeting tomorrow night at the Donald Cooper Building's third-floor boardroom on 49th St.

It all begins at 6 p.m. and will have the usual AGM fare: elections to the board, a rundown of the events over the past 12 months and financial discussions among other things.

Every team that plans to play in the outdoor league this season must have at least one representative in attendance but there's a deal on the cards if two or more show up for each team in the form of a $50 discount on registration fees.
