SPORTS CHECK: Team Koe goes out in style

The current incarnation of Kevin Koe's rink is about to finish its time together but they managed to nail down one more big win.

Koe and his rink of Marc Kennedy, Brent Laing and Ben Hebert hit the pay window with a 6-2 win over Sweden's Niklas Edin, the reigning world men's champion, in the final of the Players Championship in Toronto on Sunday.

Koe and company ran the table in the bonspiel, winning all eight of their games en route to victory. The win netted the team $30,000 but they also pocketed $40,000 for coming second in the race for the Grand Slam of Curling's Bonus Cup.

Second deadline for awards

The Sport North Awards are coming up in May and they need to know who to give the honours to this year.

Nominations are done in two parts – Part A involved the simple act of putting a name forward for consideration and that deadline was this past Sunday. Part B of the process deals with more detailed information about why the person is being nominated. That deadline is this Sunday at 5 p.m.

You can get in touch with Kendra Lakeman at Sport North for more details.

No luck for the boys

The Canadian U18 Curling Championships in St. Andrews, N.B., finished up with the gold medal games this past Sunday with Nova Scotia winning both the boys and girls titles this year.

The NWT wasn't part of either of those gold medal games, unfortunately. The boys rink from the Yellowknife Curling Centre, consisting of Adam Naugler, Logan Waddell, Caleb Brake and Jullian Bowling, failed to win a game and finished at the bottom of their group in the round-robin.
