SPORTS CHECK: Rough start for Sundogs

The Toyota U-17 Cup is underway in Surrey, B.C., and the Yellowknife Bay Soccer Club, known as the Sundogs, are already behind the eight ball.

The boys squad opened up its account on Wednesday against Vaughan SC from Ontario and were handed an 8-0 loss. They were set to take on Feidlians AA from Newfoundland and Labrador yesterday but the score wasn't known as of press time.

The girls, meanwhile, were in action against Suburban FC from Nova Scotia in their first game of the tournament and were beaten, 3-0. Yesterday saw them play the Sherwood Park Phoenix of Alberta in their second round-robin game.

See the next edition of Yellowknifer for the wrap-up.

Drop that puck

The adults are now off and running with their new hockey seasons.

The Yk Oldtimers League was first to get underway as it dropped the puck on its 2018-2019 campaign this past Tuesday evening at the Multiplex with a pair of games.

The Yk Rec Hockey League will start its new season on Oct. 11 with a game between long-time rivals Ace and Weaver and Devore.

Chef de mission named

The 2020 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) are happening in Halifax and while it's still a ways away, Team NT already has its chef de mission in place.

Jordee Reid will be the person in charge of affairs for the team after it was announced this past Tuesday in a news release from the Aboriginal Sports Circle of the NWT. Reid returns to the mission staff after serving as the assistant chef de mission for Team NT at the 2017 NAIG in Toronto.

Halifax will be the first city in the Maritimes to host NAIG.

Not so fast …

The Yk Multisport Club is still around for 2018 and doing its thing for at least one more weekend.

In honour of Thanksgiving this coming Monday, the club will be hosting the Turkey Trot, which will get going at Somba K'e Park on Sunday at 10 a.m. It will be a 5-km run or walk along the Pat McMahon Frame Lake Trail for all ages with no real competitive nature to the event.

Sign-up is happening at the Zone 4 website and will shut off at 8 p.m. tomorrow evening. Registration on race day will be between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Back to the ice

The Yellowknife Broomball Association is still a little bit away from opening up its new season but the open ice sessions before ball drop are continuing.

The next one will happen this coming Thursday at the Yk Community Arena starting at 9 p.m. and it's for women only. It's open to any woman player who is new to the sport or for those who want to get in some preparation for the upcoming season.

Equipment will be provided for anyone who doesn't have any.
