The Potential Volleyball Club's 17U girls outfit will be on the road this weekend in Calgary for the Volleyball Alberta provincial championship, which starts tomorrow.

The girls are in Division 2 for the event and will start in the round-robin, where they will play four games starting at 8 a.m., more than the standard three as their pool contains five teams. They wrap up the round-robin in the afternoon and will have at least one playoff game on Saturday afternoon. They will finish up the playoff round on Sunday.

Curling centre awards handed out

The Yellowknife Curling Centre's business for the 2017-2018 season is all over and it officially came to an end with the centre's year-end awards on April 21.

The Wade Hamer Award, which recognizes outstanding volunteers, went to the sister duo of Ann and Elizabeth Thomas for their work with the centre's junior program. Brian Yurris received the Rink Rat Award for his assisting ice maker Terry Shea for most of the season.

Shea himself was given a sendoff by the club that evening as well for his years of making the ice. He's returning home to Newfoundland and Labrador after spending a decade at the club.

Time to tee it up – almost

The Yellowknife Golf Club's 2018 season is still a couple weeks away from getting underway but the store is open.

The club's pro shop opened for business officially on April 22, according to Matthew Gray, the club's general manager and head pro, but there's still a bit of time before things get going golf-wise.

He said the driving range, which is usually the first bit of golfing people get to do, is still covered in snow and the course itself probably won't be ready to go until mid-May.

May 12 is the projected opening day, which is around where it was last year, he added.

Last dance for Team Koe

Kevin Koe's current rink is playing for the last time this weekend in Calgary at the Champions Cup, which got underway on Tuesday.

They got off on the wrong foot in the opening draw on Tuesday, dropping a 6-3 decision to Jason Gunnlaugson of Manitoba. Next up was Kurt Balderston of Alberta on Wednesday, followed by a game against Glenn Howard of Ontario yesterday and Mike McEwen of Manitoba today to wrap up the round-robin.

The playoffs start tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. with the championship game at 2 p.m.
