SPORTS CHECK: Kevin Koe starts strong

The latest stop on the Grand Slam of Curling circuit is off and running and it all got going Wednesday for Kevin Koe.

Koe and company are in Truro, N.S., for the Canadian Beef Masters and he got off to a good start by beating Jamie Murphy of Nova Scotia in his opening game, 8-5. Koe executed a runback triple-takeout with his final stone to score four and seal the deal.

He had two games yesterday against Steffen Walstad of Norway and Glenn Howard of Ontario and wraps up the round-robin against Scotland's Bruce Mouat today.

See the next edition of Yellowknifer for the final result.

Kerry Galusha back on the road

A busy season for Kerry Galusha continues in the coming days as she gets set to enter another World Curling Tour event.

Galusha and her rink of Shona Barbour, Sarah Koltun and Brittany Tran will be in Kemptville, Ont., for the Royal LePage Women's Fall Classic, which gets going this coming Thursday. It will be a triple-knockout event, meaning each team gets three chances to qualify for the playoff round.

Everyone will begin in the A bracket and Galusha will start things off against Ontario's Emma Wallingford.

Junior NBA returns

Junior NBA is back for its second season in Yellowknife.

The program replaced Steve Nash Youth Basketball, which ran for several seasons in Yellowknife, and started its 2018-2019 campaign on Oct. 20 at Range Lake North Gymnasium.

There are two age groups playing every Saturday: the five to seven-year-olds are on court from noon to 1 p.m. followed by the eight to 12-year-olds from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The ball used is smaller and lighter and the hoop stands at 6 ft., shorter than the regulation 10 ft. hoop.
