SPORTS CHECK: Coaching clinics a-plenty

It's shaping up to be a busy next few days for the Yk Minor Hockey Association and its coaches.

Everything begins this evening at the Multiplex with the Hockey Canada Coach 1 course, which starts at 6 p.m. in the PSAV Room. It continues tomorrow evening at 6 p.m., also in the PSAV Room, with the Coach 2 certification course. The Coach 2 course will have an on-ice component to it on the Ed Jeske Olympic rink before wrapping up on Friday evening.

Anyone doing the Coach 1 and Coach 2 courses need to complete online courses in order to be fully certified.

Vancouver Whitecaps come to Yellowknife

NWT Soccer and Vancouver Whitecaps FC are teaming up to bring the Major League Soccer club's Academy Centre program to the city.

The first of what's expected to be several visits by the academy is happening this weekend and it starts on Friday evening at the Fieldhouse. All players are being split into one of two groups: U9 to U11 boys and girls and U12 to U14 boys and girls with each having different time slots throughout the weekend. There will be a mixture of on-field and off-field sessions.

Every session will be led by coaches that will be travelling up from the academy in Vancouver and everyone who takes part must be a member of NWT Soccer.

Back to the ice

The Yellowknife Broomball Association is still a little bit away from opening up its new season, but the open ice sessions before ball drop are continuing.

The next one will happen tomorrow night at the Yk Community Arena starting at 9 p.m. and it's for women only. It's open to any woman player who is new to the sport or for those who want to get in some preparation for the upcoming season. That will be followed by another women's only session this coming Sunday, also at the Yk Community Arena, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Equipment will be provided for anyone who doesn't have any.
