SNOW TRAIL TALES: Sledding season starts to slow

Michael-Arbuckle

As the season winds down, you will notice fewer sleds in town but that doesn’t mean we’re sitting at home. We just need to trailer out of town to hit the trails.

If you are out this weekend, watch for overflow and be mindful of the creeks and inflow/outflow areas of our lakes. The ice will be thinning already. Also, know that the trails will start to become harder and icier as the sun causes some freeze/thaw cycles making it harder to navigate. They may also cause some liquid cooled sleds to overheat.

Last weekend, we hosted the Canadian Tire Making Trax Rally. Some 43 sleds were out raising money for Avens and Yellowknife Search and Rescue. Weather and trails were perfect. Food was great and the company best of all. Thank you to all who attended supporting our event. The Great Slave Snowmobile Association (GSSA) board did an amazing job organizing it.

A sincere thank you must also go out to our great sponsors: Canadian Tire, Polar Tech, Air North, Aurora Jeep, A Taste of Saigon, Bartle & Gibson, AutoTec, Acasta Heliflight, Capitol Theatre, Visual Effects, Boston Pizza, Overlander Sports, Co-op, Sonia Hewlko, Creative Basics, Dancing Moose Café, Diamante’s Restaurant, Superior Propane, McLennan Ross, TerraX Minerals Ltd, Jiffy Lube, Matonabee Petroleum Ltd, Weaver & Devore, Stewart Weir MacDonald Ltd, Norland Agencies, Northland Utilities, Nuna Group of Companies, GL Services, NWT Metis-Dene Development Fund Ltd, Old Town Glassworks, Shopper’s Drug Mart, Thornton’s, Territorial Beverages, Twist & Shout, Cooper Regel - A Member of Masuch Albert LLP, Arctic Farmer Nursery, Gourmet Cup, Maxime Carpentier at Avens, Pietro Bertolii at Northern Food Service and Industry Tourism and Investment.

You are the ones who made this fundraiser possible and one of the reasons I like to buy locally. I hope you all support our local businesses and industries as well.

Local trails are still in pretty good shape. The GSSA has ceased grooming operations for the year, but I believe we left the trails tip top.

Thank you to Tom, Bruce and Nick -- you made our hometown a little better. The GSSA will soon dismantle the walking trail across Frame Lake. Once you see the pylons have disappeared please consider that the lake will only be safe for a short time. We don’t need anyone swimming in Frame Lake during April or May.

The season may be winding down but it’s not over yet. I’ll get out a few more times. The season started slowly, but I believe the winter and our GSSA activities turned out well.

Hope to see you all on the trails next year.
