Premier grants Easter Bunny entrance into NWT

Premier Caroline Cochrane has made a special eggs-eption to the territory's travel restrictions as NWT children await the arrival of the Easter Bunny on Sunday.

The Easter Bunny's yearly visit poses challenges this year as the GNWT had declared on March 20 that all travel into the NWT would be halted as a way to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

In a letter sent to the Easter Bunny on Saturday, Cochrane stated that she has been in contact with Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Kami Kandola on the matter.

"As a mother and a grandmother, I know how excited children are when you visit them, so I asked the NWT Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) if you would be able to make your usual deliveries this year," she wrote.

"I am sure you will be pleased to hear that the CPHO has authorized you to freely roam around the NWT tonight to deliver Easter eggs and candy, as long as you wash your paws and wear a fabric mask to avoid spreading any germs."

Cochrane also asked the bunny to keep six feet away from children and to only make deliveries at night "while children are safely sleeping in their beds."

"Because it is easier to keep to keep to a safe physical distance while you are outside, the CPHO says you are allowed to deliver eggs and candy outside any time this weekend," Cochrane wrote the Easter Bunny.
