More hardware for gymnastics

Two years ago, Celena Hoeve did what hadn't been done since John Tram did it in 2006 – win a medal at the Western Canadian Gymnastics Championships.

That was a silver medal on the balance beam. Fast forward to 2018 and Emma Leathem has joined the exclusive club.

Leathem is the latest Yellowknife gymnast to hit the podium thanks to her silver medal win on the uneven bars at the 2018 Western Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Spruce Grove, Alta., late last month.

Her score of 9.225 was good enough for second place but it was very nearly a gold medal, said Tram, as she missed top spot by just one-tenth of a point.

It's the first silver medal on the uneven bars for a gymnast from the NWT as the championships and Tram said it came at the perfect time.

"She has had a strong bar routine at other competitions all season long but managed to peak at the right time and pull off an excellent routine, even sticking her landing," he said.

Leathem was one of six gymnasts from the Yellowknife Gymnastics Club at the meet and all of them competed at the Junior Olympic Level 8 (JO8).

In addition to Leathem's silver medal, there were several other top-10 finishes at the event. Jade Ko had sixth place finishes on the balance beam and the vault to go along with a seventh place finish on the floor routine, while Leathem's other top-10 result was in the vault, where she finished right behind Ko in seventh.

Nathalie Shafer was ninth on the vault and Taylor Sorenson managed a 10th place finish in the floor routine.

Tram said the meet was the culmination of a long season of preparation.

"The team has been training all season for this competition and made sure to end the season with some impressive results," he said.
