After firing his lawyers during a sentencing hearing earlier this month, convicted murderer Kevin Mantla is now set to be sentenced in November.

The 38-year-old Gameti man, convicted of second-degree murder and attempted murder in a 2015 stabbing at a Yellowknife apartment, appeared in NWT Supreme Court Monday, where Justice Louise Charbonneau set a sentencing date for Nov. 8.

Sentencing submissions from the Crown and Mantla's defence will be heard on Oct. 31.

Charbonneau said the new date, months after the original July sentencing date, was further away than she would have liked, but that it was the only date her availability allowed.

In September 2015, Mantla carried out a bloody stabbing at a Lanky Court apartment,  killing Elvis Lafferty and seriously injuring Lafferty’s partner, Mantla’s ex-girlfriend.

Mantla's last minute firing of his lawyers prompted frustration from relatives of Lafferty, who said the delay was, "like another blow of trauma."
