Did you know the only thing that differentiates a fiddle from a violin is the style of music that's traditionally played on both instruments?
You do now, and so do dozens of Yellowknifers – young and old – who, along with learning that fact, picked up some basic fiddling skills at an Aurora Fiddle Society-hosted beginner's workshop in Ndilo Saturday.
From looking to cross off a bucket list goal to pursuing a lifelong interest, rookie fiddlers gathered at the K'àlemì Dene School , where B.C.-based musicians Trish and Geoff Horrocks offered lessons to fresh fiddlers of all skill levels.
Aurora Fiddle Society board member and workshop coordinator Ryan McCord said the day was all about community and song coming together.
"(New beginners) see the value in playing music and the joy it can bring them and they want to learn to do that," said McCord.
"It's about bringing people together and making music together."
The next workshop is set for sometime in September.
