A structure fire that prompted a full group alert from Yellowknife Fire Division Thursday originated at the Ace Enterprises’ quarry on Curry Drive, the city says.
The blaze, which sent a large plume of black smoke into the air, was reported by a bystander just after 12:30 p.m.
Responding firefighters observed a “large amount of smoke and flame coming from an asphalt processing facility,” stated a news release from the city Friday.
Employees at the facility were evacuated from the area due to reports of a significant amount of combustible liquids at the scene.
All on-call and off-duty YKFD personnel, along with a tanker, pump, and MED vehicle – which blocked traffic on Kam Lake Road near Curry Drive – attended the scene.
A “defensive position” was established to maintain safety. After the fire had burned to a manageable level, firefighters quelled the blaze with a foam extinguisher, stated the news release.
No one was injured during the fire.
The territory's fire marshal is investigating the cause of Thursday's fire, which remains undetermined.
