Familiar faces took home gold this weekend at the NWT Volleyball Territorial Open Championships.
The men's bracket saw two teams face off against each other for the second year in a row with similar results. YK Blue took a straight set victory over Frosted Tip to reclaim their crown after beating the same team with the same score line from last year.
“It feels good, We took it home again, got good momentum and can`t say more than it feels good to win,” said Kyu Tompkins, captain of YK Blue. “It feels good to beat (Frosted Tips), they're a tough team to play against, always. You never know how its gonna go, so pulling out the three sets it's surprising because they're always a difficult team to play against, but it feels good.”
YK Blue came out strong beating Frosted Tips by a score of 25-17. In the second set, the champs fell behind early and stayed behind before rallying to win 25-22. The third set saw a clean sweep beating the silver medalists handily capping off another undefeated tournament.
On the women's side of the tournament it was a five-set barn burner of a finals that saw That's What She Set take down The Diggers.
“We were all very tired, it was really good, it was great to come out with the win, but the other girls pushed us hard and it was just fun to play,” said Rielly MacNeil, captain of That's What She Set.
After beating The Diggers earlier in the tournament in a 2-0 sweep, That's What She Set came out to a roaring start in the finals taking the first set. Yet the second place team wasn't going to hand the trophy over easily as they took the next two sets, before That's What She Set rallied to win the fourth and the final fifth set.
The victory saw That's What She Set cap off an undefeated weekend that had the victors take the territorial crown back from 'Hit It' this weekend's bronze medalist. That's What She Set won the 2017 Canadian Tire Open, the other NWT Volleyball annual tournament.
“The Diggers played great, you cant take them away from them. It was a great tournament and I'm just happy we got to play,” said MacNeil.
The Territorial tournament is normally held in March each year while Potential Volleyball Club typically hosts a tournament in December. Due to complications with scheduling, Potential wasn't able to host the December tournament this year and asked the NWT Volleyball Association (NWTVA) if the two tournaments could switch dates.
Mike Thompson, the tournament organizer and director at large with the NWTVA said they are still hoping to run a March tournament with the Potential Volleyball Club.
“Definitely still planning on running a tournament later in the new year,” said Thompson. “Hopefully even bigger and better.”
