Falcons fly to the top again in track and field

Another NWT Track and Field Championships, another year of Sir John Franklin at the top.

The Falcons are once again your overall grand aggregate champions of the largest annual sporting event in the NWT as their team of athletes managed an aggregate score of 15.11 points per athlete (total number of points earned by a team divided by the number of athletes on said team) to take home the big prize. The school also won the school grand aggregate banner as well, which takes the amount of points earned by a school team – minus the junior, senior and master athletes – and divides it among the students.

It was the final go-round for Sir John Franklin's Sahara Lafferty, who is graduating this year, and she said it felt great to win one last scholastic title.

“We all put our share into winning this one,” she said. “It feels really good to win it again, especially in my last year.”

Lafferty herself ended up with the overall silver medal in the junior girls division as she won the javelin and was second in the 200-metre and 1,500 metre races.

Winning the grand aggregate title means plenty of top-six finished as that's where the points are handed out but Lafferty said having a smaller team was the big reason.

“In the end, we had more first and second place finishes and with less athletes, that was a big help,” she said.

Sir John Franklin's Angela Martin did double duty in Hay River; not only was she a coach, she was also an athlete. She won all four of the events she entered to win the overall gold medal in the senior women's division.

But coach Martin said all she had to do was make sure the athletes did their thing.

St. Pat's won the overall and school total points banners at the NWT Track and Field Championships in Hay River on June 8. Holding the banner are Abby Webster, left, and Krissy Stuparyk; holding the trophy are, from left, Emma Taylor and Hannah Courtoreille.

“We just made sure they got to all of their events on time and they did the rest,” she said.

St. Pat's ended up winning two banners of their own in the form of the total overall points and total school points. Their overall total was 683.37 and it was a total that stunned even Tim Borchuk, co-organizer of the event.

“I can't remember ever reading out a number that big before,” he said.

When a team is winning the points banners, it means the results weren't a problem but St. Pat's coach Tobi Dusome said she was surprised a bit at how well the school did.

“You're so busy with everything else that you don't pay attention to the numbers but you hear the kids talking and counting things up and I was blown away by the number,” she said.

She also said the surprising part of it all was the participating athletes were relatively very young.

“We had a really young team this year,” she said. “Lots of kids in Grades 8, 9 and 10 and not a lot of Grade 12s because it's a tough time of year for them to come down because of exams but the participation is what I'm all about and what I'm most proud of. We get a lot of kids out and whoever wants to come, we take.”

Dusome was once again the class of the master women's division as she won all of her events, even setting a new record in the long jump of 4.21 metres.
