BUSINESS COLUMN: They've got the juice

Michael-Hugall

After a month of steady sales, the owner of Booster Juice said business has been good.

The franchisee who asked not to be named due to a professional conflict said she and her husband had never owned a business before opening their establishment.

"We came to the conclusion that Booster Juice was the type of product that Yellowknife was lacking," said the franchisee. "We really hope it stays steady and that we can keep up the longevity of the business."

The franchisee said the next step is to integrate their business into the community by setting up booths at different events such as Folk on the Rocks.

Dan's Place closing at Centre Square Mall

Dan Hayward, 69, will be closing Dan's Place second-hand shop in the Centre Square Mall.

"This whole process obviously takes its own time and it has taken a toll on me but it's always been a pleasure serving my customers...Yellowknifers are the best people in the world," said Hayward.

Dan's Place has been a fixture in the mall for the past four years but Hayward said he'll be closing up shop due to slow business, stress and health concerns.

The serial entrepreneur has opened and closed a number of businesses in the city over the last 40 years and Dan's Place was characterized by its heaps of used goods including clothing, toys, electronics and Hayward's friendly, personable service.

The final decision on when to close up shop will be made when Hayward returns from Edmonton on May 24, he said.

But the Hayward name will remain in the mall as Dan's wife Nancy Hayward will be opening her own venture a short distance from the second-hand shop called Nancy's Place. She'll be offering a host of products including crepes, hot-dogs and

milkshakes, he said.

Fat Fox takes a breather

The Fat Fox Cafe will be looking for a new downtown location, says co-owner Jeremy Flatt.

The Range Street cafe has been serving the community since June 2016 but will be closing at the end of the week because of a persistent water leak.

Flatt said he was hopeful the cafe would eventually reopen in a new downtown location.

"We have had uncertainty hanging over this space," he said. We're really optimistic about our ability to reopen in a good spot."

The Fat Fox has been embraced by the community, he said.

"We got a chance to try out our idea and see what Yellowknife would think of it and the response has been amazing," he said. It's been so sad the last three weeks just having to tell everybody that we're closing."

May 19 will be the last day of operation at their current location.

Cellar future uncertain

The popular Cellar Bar and Grill will be closing, but it's unclear if the live-music venue will re-open under new ownership. Located on Franklin Avenue, the downstatirs room is operated by Dale Bardeau, who is moving out of town, according to media reports. Yellowknifer hasn't been able to reach Bardeau.
