BREAKING : Privacy breach could include NWT medical information

Medical records on a laptop stolen in Ottawa on May 9 had sensitive medical information about patients in the NWT.

The Chief Health Privacy Officer concluded her investigation on June 18, 2018, stated a release from the Department of Health and Social Services.

The investigation determined there was a privacy breach however the release did not disclose how many NWT patients have been affected at this time.

In the release Health Minister Glenn Abernethy stated he is committed to ensuring patient records are kept confidential at all times.

"I would like to apologize to our residents.  We must ensure that we are taking all necessary steps to protect the private health information of our residents.  I have directed our officials to ensure that patients’ personal health information is protected," stated Abernethy.

More information will follow this afternoon after a teleconference with the Deputy of Health, Bruce Cooper ; Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Andre Corriveau and members from the Department of Infrastructure.
