Assault, break and enter calls increased in February: RCMP

Yellowknife Mounties responded to more assault and break and enter complaints last month compared to February 2018, but the detachment continues to see a drop in the number of prisoners held in cells.

RCMP received 72 calls for service related to assaults last month, a 30 per cent jump from the 55 calls recorded in February of last year, according to monthly statistics released Monday.

Mounties responded to nine residential and business break and enter reports in February, compared to just one during the same month in 2018. Since the new year, police have fielded 14 break and enter calls – double the amount recorded in the first two months of 2018.

Calls for service for Liquor Act violations, on the other hand, continue to decline. Mounties responded to 43 calls last month – 40 fewer than February 2018’s tally.

This time last year, Mounties had received 143 Liquor Act-related calls since January. Since January 2019, 85 Liquor Act calls for service have been recorded, representing a 40 per cent decrease. Despite the drop in Liquor Act offences, police fielded more calls for “causing a disturbance/mischief,” including public intoxication, last month compared to February 2018.

Last month, Yellowknife RCMP held 150 prisoners in cells, a 12 per cent drop from the number of prisoners lodged in cells in February 2018.
