Police have issued an arrest warrant for a man they say fled the scene of a deadly crash on Highway 3 near Behchoko last week.
A female passenger was killed following a single-vehicle rollover near Mosquito Creek, south of the community, around 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Two others were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police believe Steven Theriault, 44, of Behchoko, was driving.
He’s wanted on an arrest warrant “as a result of the fatal motor vehicle incident,” states a news release issued by Behchoko RCMP Monday.
RCMP say another male occupant left the scene of the wreck with Theriault before police arrived.
The second male occupant has not been identified by police.
Attempts to locate Theriault have been unsuccessful. Police believe he may have suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash, and want to ensure the suspect receives medical attention.
Theriault is described by police as Indigenous, “5’8” (177 cm), 230 lbs. (105 kg) with black hair and brown eyes.”
“While RCMP believe Steven Theriault may still be in the Northwest Territories, he may also have departed for Alberta,” state police.
Anyone with information on Theriault’s whereabouts, or the whereabouts of the second male occupant who also left the scene of the crash, is urged to call Behchoko RCMP at 867-392-1111.
