Arrest warrant issued for no-show who forced mistrial

An arrest warrant has been issued for a man whose failure to appear in a Yellowknife court Wednesday morning forced a mistrial, sending a dozen surprised jurors home.

Justice Andrew Mahar declared a mistrial after Alden Joseph Lennie, 35, failed to appear in NWT Supreme Court for the second day in a row.

Lennie, who was set to face a 2015 sexual assault charge during what was to be a week-long trial, appeared in court on Monday, when the jury first sat.

But he didn’t show up on Tuesday, prompting Mahar to issue an arrest warrant.

Lennie again failed to appear this morning, and a mistrial was declared.

RCMP is continuing to search for Lennie.

Four witnesses were expected to testify.
