A run for the moms

The usual script for Mother's Day usually involves breakfast in bed, doing the chores or anything else to make sure moms do as little as possible. Some moms, though, decided to hit Somba K'e Park with their families to take part in the annual Mother's Day Run, organized by the Yk Multisport Club. For most, it was a chance to simply get out and enjoy the fresh – and chilly – air but this was a timed event and there were results kept.

The younger runners on the day got the chance to do a fun run – 150-metres for the tykes and 1-kilometre for the older kids – while the big running was left up to those who were up for the challenge.

In the women's 5-km race, Tonya Huck was first across the finish line in either the 5-km or 10-km races as she stopped the clock in a time of 21 minutes, 58.4 seconds.

She said the cold weather was a great motivator to dress for the occasion.

"I actually had to go home before the race started and put pants on," she said with a giggle. "I came with shorts and a T-shirt so I figured I would go home and put some warmer layers on but running in the cold weather doesn't make a difference on how fast you go."

The route for the 5-km race saw runners take on the paved portion of the Pat McMahon Frame Lake Trail with the start and finish line at Somba K'e Park. Those doing the 10-km portion did the same route twice.

It was a mostly flat course with some dips in it and Huck said that was nice.

"It was good to not have to run a bunch of hills," she said. "If there was a hill, you had a downhill after and that made things easier."

Scott Young was the winner of the men's 5-km race and finished exactly one second behind Huck.

She admitted she wasn't sure if Young was doing the 10-km race and she took no chances.

"I thought it he was doing the 10-km, I should go a little faster," she said.

In the 10-km events, Tamara Statchook was first across the finish line in the women's race in a time of 50 minutes, 14.8 seconds while Tim Enson won the men's race in 43 minutes, 50.5 seconds.

As with last year's event, everything was in support of the Yellowknife Women's Society but the amount raised wasn't known as of press time.
