SPORTS CHECK: Time to hit the pitch

The NWT's first big scholastic territorial championship kicks off this afternoon in Hay River.

The Elks Outdoor Soccer Tournament will feature teams from around the southern portion of the territory and that includes Yellowknife, which will have teams from Sir John Franklin, St. Pat's, William McDonald and J.H. Sissons heading down Highway 3.

The round-robin will start at 1 p.m. today and will continue through Saturday with the playoffs and championship games in all divisions all day Sunday.

See the next edition of Yellowknifer for the recap.

Let the balancing begin

The Yk Minor Hockey Association is getting its house league affairs in order for the new season and the big part of that is figuring out who will play on what team.

The balancing process will begin this evening at the Multiplex and it starts with the novice division. Balancing is done through a series of timed drills and scrimmages with every player in the age category being judged. From there, the coaches decide which player will be put on what team in discussion with the division governor.

Everything will go on until Sept. 30.

Award winners wanted

NWT Soccer will be handing out its annual awards in November at its annual general meeting but it needs to know who to give them to.

Nominations for the seven awards up for grabs are open and they include the Male and Female Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Referee of the Year, Sportsmanship, Volunteer of the Year and the Paul Stipdonk Memorial Life Member Award.

The nomination forms are available on the NWT Soccer website and you can email Lyric Sandhals, NWT Soccer's executive director, when you're done or snail mail them.
