Another summer staple is back for another year and just like everything else in town in recent days, it too fell victim to the weather.
But a little rain was nothing these beach bums couldn't handle.
Yk Beach Volleyball hosted its first event of 2018 with the Aboriginal Day tournament on June 24. A total of four mens teams and four womens teams took to the sand courts at Long Lake Beach on what turned out to be a nicer day than the one before, which is when the tournament was originally scheduled to be held.
Becca Denley with Yk Beach Volleyball said the plan was always to play on the 24th if things didn't go as planned.
“If possible, the make-up date was the day after and turned out we needed it,” she said.
When the volleyball was over and done with, one of the titles went back down the highway as the duo of Monique Day and Taylor Phillips of Fort Smith defeated Shania Clark and Alyssa Carswell of Yellowknife in the final. Emily Hamm of Yellowknife teamed up with Veronica McDonald of Fort Smith to finish in third.
On the mens side, Shad MacLeod and Davin St. Pierre won out by beating Kyu Tompkins and Phil Youngblut in the final while Matt Craig and Matt Brien ended up in third place.
“We had some dropouts because of the postponement but it was still a good turnout,” said Denley.
All of the top teams got prizes from the Copperhouse restaurant.
The rain the day before made the courts a bit damp, which Denley said isn't too conducive to good beach volleyball.
“The ground was really saturated and there were lots of puddles, which is always a problem after a rainfall for beach volleyball,” she said. “We like to have deep, fluffy sand.”
The next tournament for Yk Beach Volleyball is the Canada Day Tournament, which is scheduled for July 7.
“We know it's the weekend after but we always hold the tournament that day,” said Denley.
