The Northwest Territories is home to the superintendent of Canadian superintendents.

Shannon Barnett-Aikman apparently made her last year as director of education for the Tłı̨chǫ Community Services Agency (TCSA) count, not to mention the rest of her 17-year career in schools.

On Wednesday the Canadian Association of School System Administrators (CASSA) awarded Barnett-Aikman its EXL Award as 2019 Canadian Superintendent of the Year.

The association is holding its annual conference in British Columbia.

Barnett-Aikman spent two years teaching in London, England before taking a teaching job at the Sahtu Divisional Education Council's Mackenzie Mountain School in 2002. She was promoted to principal in 2005, spent 2011-12 as the health, wellness and nutrition coordinator for K-12 programs for the GNWT, and 2012 to 2018 as director of education for the TCSA.

She became their chief executive officer last year.

Barnett-Aikman also served in a number of leadership roles in the NWT, including as a member of GNWT committees on student assessment, strengthening teacher instruction and curriculum implementation.

More to come.
