Team NT keeps the wins coming

It's been a profitable week in the ulu department for Team NT at the 2018 Arctic Winter Games.

As of press time, the territory's best and brightest had collected 44 ulus across all sports and there is sure to be more to come.

The haul includes 10 gold ulus with a podium topper coming courtesy of Effie Lockhart in the juvenile girls 3-kilometre snowshoe biathlon. Her time of 30 minutes, 22.4 seconds was 20 seconds better than Arina Semeniuk of Yamal, who finished second.

Dettah's Zhanayii Drygeese also won herself a gold ulu on Tuesday as she had the furthest throw in the juvenile girls snow snake. Her throw of 246 ft., not only claimed victory but also set a new Arctic Winter Games record, breaking the old mark of 226 ft., 6 in. set in 2010.

Nicolas Bennett hit the podium in cross-country skiing in Fort Smith thanks to his second place finish in the junior boys 5-km classic interval start. Speedskating has also been good to Yellowknife as a trio of skaters ended up with silver ulus: Daphne Cloutier in the junior girls 500-metre, Luke Dizon in the juvenile boys 500-metre and Grace Clark in the junior girls 1,000-metre.

In snowboarding, Tegan Konge snagged herself two silver ulus in the junior girls division, those coming in the big air and rail jam competitions. Ben Toner was also a silver uluit in snowboarding as he was second in the junior boys rail jam and junior boys banked slalom events. Georgia Martin followed her teammates onto the snowboarding podium as she won silver in the junior girls banked slalom.

In terms of bronze ulus, Cloutier won herself one of those in speedskating, this time in the junior girls 1,000-metre while Dizon got one of his own in the juvenile boys 1,000-metre. Konge made it three ulus around her neck by winning a bronze in the junior girls banked slalom while Milo Martin took bronze in the junior boys banked slalom and River McQueen did the same in the juvenile boys banked slalom.
