Are you a young aspiring writer? If so, your creative skills could win you a week-long writing camp in Calgary.
NorthWords started the “Youth Writing Contest” to allow young people the chance to show their skills for the chance to study with some of the best teachers in the country at YouthWrite, a writing camp for kids.
The winner will also see their story printed in Yellowknife's Edge Magazine.
“I'm quite excited about it,” said Charmaine Routery, executive director of NorthWords. “A lot of our work is Yellowknife-centered because that's where we are, so we're hoping that this will be something that every child in the NWT can participate in.”
The challenge is fairly straightforward. Choose a topic you care about and write an original piece of work (1000 words or less) that has not been previously published. It can be fiction, nonfiction or poetry. You must be an NWT youth between the ages of 13 and 17 to enter.
When you’re done, send it to info@northwordsnwt.ca by Saturday, March 30.
A panel of judges will select the winner. Be sure to read the rules online before submitting.

The free workshop is taking place at the North Star building in Yellowknife from March 2 to 3 and is sure to ignite your creative spark.
Gail Sidonie Sobat, a well-known writer, educator, performer and the founder of YouthWrite, will be hosting the event.
She is the author of several books for young adult including, “Jaime’s Got a Gun: A Graphic Novel” and “The Book of Mary.”
