The first big warm-up tournament ahead of the Spike It! school tournaments is happening in Inuvik later this month.
The Paulou Ittungna Memorial Volleyball Tournament gets going on Oct. 12 and as of press time, a total of six teams had signed up to play, said Colin Pybus, the tournament's organizer.
There has been some interest in community teams from around the Beaufort Delta and Sahtu regions, he added, but nothing has been solidified as of yet although he does expect some teams from the Beaufort Delta to show up and play.
The deadline to enter teams is Oct. 9.
Scholarship winners announced
NWT
Three Indigenous post-secondary students got themselves a little bit of help in paying for their education thanks to the Aboriginal Sports Circle of the NWT.
Gavin Broadhead of Hay River, Jacqueline Gon of Behchoko and Brandon Thom of Fort Providence were the recipients of a scholarship from the Sports Circle last month with each receiving $2,000.
Broadhead is studying kinesiology and the University of Lethbridge, Gon is studying kinesiology and secondary education at the University of Alberta and Thom is studying personal training, sports management and sport and fitness leadership at Camosun College in Victoria.
Chef de mission named
NWT
The 2020 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) are happening in Halifax and while it's still a ways away, Team NT already has its chef de mission in place.
Jordee Reid will be the person in charge of affairs for the team after it was announced this past Tuesday in a news release from the Aboriginal Sports Circle of the NWT. Reid returns to the mission staff after serving as the assistant chef de mission for Team NT at the 2017 NAIG in Toronto.
Halifax will be the first city in the Maritimes to host NAIG.
