SPORTS CHECK: Recreation conference set to begin

Somba K'e/Yellowknife

It's the biggest time of the year for the NWT Recreation and Parks Association.

It all starts on Oct. 23 as the association hosts its annual conference in Yellowknife that will run through to Oct. 26. Several guest speakers and workshops are planned over the course of the conference with more than 100 people in the recreation field expected to attend, according to the association. The week includes the association's annual general meeting on Oct. 25, which starts at 10:45 a.m.

The NWTRPA Awards are also happening on Oct. 25 with a start time of 6 p.m. A total of five awards will be handed out, including the Award of Excellence, Innovation Award, Active Elder, the Scott McAdam Youth Leadership Award and the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association Award of Merit.

Smaller than normal

Thebacha/Fort Smith

The last big warm-up ahead of the Spike It! volleyball tournament is in the books but it wasn't as big as it has been in past years.

The annual Lawrie Hobart Memorial Volleyball Tournament wrapped up in Fort Smith on Oct. 21 with teams from Yellowknife, Ndilo and Hay River joining in to compete against squads from the host community.

Allie McDonald, who helped organize the tournament this year, said transportation was the big issue for a lot of teams and that translated into less teams this time around.

Event drummers wanted

NWT

The Aboriginal Sports Circle of the NWT hosts several events where drummers are needed and they need a few good ones.

Individuals or groups can sign up to become part of a directory being put together by the Sports Circle. Some of the events where drummers are required include the annual awards banquet and the annual Traditional Games Championships in Yellowknife.

You can get more details from Shawna McLeod, the Sports Circle's traditional games manager.
