An emergency signal sent from a remote location south of Tulita - in an area only accessible by water or air - has triggered an active RCMP investigation.

RCMP received the signal from an emergency communications device around 7: 45 a.m. this morning.

A helicopter company, along with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR), is assisting NWT RCMP.

The department is helping "as there is a possibility wildlife may have been involved, or in the area," states an RCMP news release issued late Thursday afternoon.

Details related to the emergency signal, and the subsequent investigation, remain scarce.

RCMP are not asking for the public's help in aiding the investigation due to the remote location of where the emergency signal originated.

Police aren't providing further details at this time, due to the fluid, ongoing nature of the investigation, states the release.

Updates will be provided when available, say police.

The investigation remains "active" as of Friday morning, an ENR spokesperson told News/North.

RCMP are expected to offer an update Friday.

Updates to follow.
