Putting on the pounds during the pandemic?

Have you recently had to loosen your belt a notch, then maybe another notch? Notice your shirts getting a bit tight? Is that six-pack turning into a keg? Oh no, is that the new normal? Eschia, take it easy eh!

These days we turn on the radio and there's someone saying stay home to stay healthy. Turn on the TV, another leader is saying to stay home. The problem is we tend to develop bad habits when we stay home … or should I say I develop bad habits? Hahaha.

One bad habit that's so easy to develop is snacking too much, and the problem is we (I) don't snack on healthy things.

In fact, we often turn to the most lip smacking snacks which are loaded with empty carbs, sugar, and salt.Roy Erasmus Sr., certified life coach and Dene columnist for New/North and NNSL Media

Instead, we need to grab things like fruit, berries and vegetables and spice it up, like an apple with almond butter. It's okay to have unhealthy snacks once in a while, but do your best to limit your portions.

And don't you just love to order out? It's tasty, and no cooking or cleaning the kitchen afterwards. But we can order too much and too often.

How yucky. Once again, it can be food that tastes good but which can be bad for you, and often we order too much and end up overeating.

Try to eat small portions and order as much fresh fruits, vegetables, and protein as possible. In fact, try to cook and eat like our ancestors did: fresh meat, fish, and vegetables, especially if you can get it from the land.

The trick is to eat small portions, especially comfort foods. I know it feels and tastes good going down, but they're usually loaded with butter, cheese, and/or sugar. So, want to keep your weight down? Have small portions. Well yaaaaaa!

What about bread and pasta you say? They turn into sugar and easily add to the love handles. Again, eat bread or pasta in moderation and try to eat them before 1 p.m., so you have time to burn it off.

And don't forget the "almighty bottle." Seems like a lot of people are drinking more than usual these days. There's a lot of calories in beer and if you're mixing your drinks with pop, whooee.

Have you tried to exercise during or after a good drunk? Pretty hard to do, eh? So, drink in moderation.

Do you like a nice glass of orange or apple juice with your breakfast? Or a nice cold pop or iced tea to quench your thirst? You should know that they all have about nine or 10 teaspoons of sugar.

Ya, that juice that is supposed to be so healthy for you, is no longer recommended because they contain so much sugar. So only drink pure juice, not sugar added, at about five ounces a day and water it down. I know it's hard but try not to drink pop, ever!

There is not a single thing that's good for you in pop. And it's soooooooo bad for you, especially if you have diabetes or are borderline diabetic. Drink water or tea instead.

Seems like everybody's binge-watching their favourite shows and sometimes that's after being on their laptops or computers all day. Definitely not cool. Get up and move around once in a while, man.

Go for a walk while being sure to stay six feet away from people, do some exercises, jog, chase your honey around the house, lol. You can also stretch, jump around, twist and shout, run on the spot, or chop some wood.

Working up a sweat will make you feel a lot better and keep you in better shape.

So, there's a few tips to help you from putting on the pounds in a pandemic. Hope It helps.
