Overdue Fort McPherson hunter found dead

RCMP

A 40-year-old hunter from Fort McPherson has been found dead following an overnight search effort.

The deceased man was located near kilometre 465 of the Dempster Highway Sunday morning, states a news release from the Yukon Coroner's Service Wednesday.

Family members on social media have identified the man as William James Thompson.

The Fort McPherson resident, who had been hunting caribou on the Yukon side of the NWT/Yukon border, was reported overdue Saturday evening after they didn't return from the trip.

Despite a blizzard dumping 20 to 25 cm of snow, members of the search party located the body of the overdue hunter around 9 a.m. Sunday after an overnight effort.

The Yukon Coroner's Service, with the help of Fort McPherson RCMP, is leading the investigation.
