NEWS BRIEFS: Fiddling and Jigging Competition planned

The Soaring Eagle Friendship Centre will host The Biggest Fiddling & Jigging Championships North of 60 from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.

The fiddling and jigging competitions – for seniors, adults, youth and children – will take place on Sept. 1.

On Aug. 31, there will be a fish fry dinner, and a bingo will take place on Sept. 2.

Film society to host movie on the beach

The Hay River Film Society is presenting Movies on the Beach on Sept. 1 at the Hay River Territorial Park.

It will be the society's first-ever outdoor screening, which will feature the Oscar-nominated animated film The Red Turtle.

Through the story of a man shipwrecked on a tropical island inhabited by turtles, crabs and birds, The Red Turtle recounts the milestones in the life of a human being.

The film is rated PG.

The screening will be free.

Alzheimer Society offers information

The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and the Northwest Territories is presenting the Seeds of Hope Family Learning Series.

The four-part series provides education and support for families and care partners of people living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

The series will help answer people's questions and address concerns about living with the disease. The first series begins on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. and will continue every Thursday evening in September.

It will be held in the Alice Cambridge Room at the Whispering Willows seniors' housing complex.

Prize's letter of intent deadline extended

The letter of intent deadline for the 2018 Arctic Inspiration Prize has been extended until Sept. 10.

Teams that wish to submit a letter of intent now have a second opportunity to receive feedback on their eligibility for nominations.

Up to $3 million will be awarded across three categories.

For 2018, one team can win $1 million, up to four teams can win up to $500,000, and up to seven youth teams can win up to $100,000.

The deadline for nominations is Oct. 15.

According to a news release from the Arctic Inspiration Prize, it was evident that certain criteria needed to be better clarified following the first deadline for a letter of intent.
