The Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce is offering a $1,500 scholarship to a business student from Yellowknife. In order to be eligible for the award, the student must be a Canadian citizen who has lived in Yellowknife for the last 12 months. Students who attend school outside the territory but return for the summer holidays qualify.
The student must have been accepted into or currently enrolled in a full-time post-secondary business program and have plans to return to work in the Northwest Territories after graduation.

Youth newcomers have Dene camp celebration
Newcomer students from the Settlement in Schools (SWIS) Program of Yellowknife spent a recent afternoon at Avens-A Community for Seniors.
Carol Norwegian, Volunteer and Recreations supervisor at Avens, taught the kids and residents her knowledge and shared her Dene culture: traditional games, art, clothing, plants, bannock and caribou stew, stated a news release.
She also taught them how to cut and smoke fish.
The 20 students attending that event were from The Philippines, China, Syria, Haiti, India, Vietnam, Somalia and Sudan.
The program is managed by CDETNO and offers bilingual support services for adaptation and school integration for students and their parents who are new to Canada.

Inaugural Northern writing prize
In early 2018, Briarpatch Magazine received a generous donation to fund a feature article, photo essay, or graphic narrative that examines the politics, environmental issues, and/or activism present in Canada's North.
The winner will receive $600 and will be published in the January 2019 issue of Briarpatch Magazine.
"We recognize that the North is defined culturally, rather than by strict geographic lines, and we're looking for writers who have a strong connection to the land, culture, and communities of the North, stated a news release.
"We are especially seeking queries from Indigenous people, people living in non-urban areas, and in investigative journalism."

Fire and frost study underway
A research team out of the University of Lethbridge is headed to the Northwest Territories to study the impacts of forest fires on the Northern environment.
Dr. Laura Chasmer an assistant professor will be leading the ground team on the project as they study the effects of permafrost thawing in areas of forest fire burn.
The first results to come from the study will be published in late August, said Chasmer. She also noted that her team is constantly working with the Government of the Northwest Territories to make their information readily available to the public.
