Nineteen students in Grades 9 and Grade 10 from across the NWT have been selected to participate in this week's 16th Youth Parliament of the Legislative Assembly.
The last day of the program includes a mock session in the chamber, where students debate motions in the seats of their MLAs.
The mock session will take place on May 17 from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Ricther Ignacio will be the student representing Hay River North, while Reegan Jungkind will represent Hay River South.
Workshop planned on family violence
A workshop on stopping family violence will be held on May 28 at the Soaring Eagle Friendship Centre.
It will provide bystanders/witnesses with information to increase awareness of the many types of family violence and abuse.
The workshop is set from 1:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on May 28.
Interested persons should call Soaring Eagle Friendship Centre to register.
Call for proposals for seniors' projects
The New Horizons for Seniors Program for 2018-2019 issued a call for proposals on May 7 for community-based projects.
The call for proposals for the federal funding will be open until June 15.
Organizations are invited to apply for funding under the priorities of benefitting vulnerable populations of seniors, focusing on diversity of Canada's seniors, and promoting volunteerism.
Eligible organizations can receive up to $25,000 in project funding. Starting this year, organizations that have not benefitted from funding during the last five years can receive up to $5,000 as part of the new small grants pilot project.
"Local organizations are encouraged to submit projects led or inspired by seniors for the New Horizons for Seniors Program funding," said Michael McLeod, the MP for the Northwest Territories, in a May 10 news release. "These activities empower seniors, enabling them to pursue an active lifestyle, expand their social network and explore new learning experiences that will better equip them to face the challenges of our rapidly evolving society."
Library committee sets annual meeting
The Hay River Library Committee has set its annual general meeting.
The gathering will take place on May 23.
Members of the public are welcome to attend.
