An Inuvik man appeared in NWT Territorial court on Tuesday following a July 27 stabbing at one of the city's busiest intersections.The stabbing happened in the intersection of 49 Street and Franklin Avenue at approximately 8:06 p.m. last Friday, said RCMP spokesperson Heather Cosenzo.
Kurtis Thrasher, 34, is charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of failing to comply with an undertaking.
Thrasher's criminal history includes multiple counts of aggravated assault and one conviction for armed robbery. Thrasher appeared in NWT territorial court for the first time on this charge yesterday morning.
The victim was taken to hospital immediately following the altercation with a laceration to his left eyebrow and a deep wound to his head.
Thrasher was also taken to hospital for cuts on his hand, said Cosenzo.
Cosenzo confirmed the victim is said to be a male in his 30s and was flown to Edmonton for further treatment.
Sources confirmed to Yellowknifer the patient was in stable condition at the time of the flight.
Thrasher was arrested on Friday night shortly after the altercation, said Cosenzo.
It is unknown if Thrasher and the victim were known to each other.
In a report to the city's Municipal Services Committee last week, RCMP statistics showed an in increase in all categories of assaults in the city, with 435 through June, compared to 387 for the same time period in 2017.
While there have been decreases in some categories of crime so far this year – until total calls for service – including under the Liquor Act, causing a disturbance,mischief and public intoxication – total calls for service through June rose to 5,319 from 4,510.
