Man injured after ENR officer shoots at bear; RCMP investigating

An investigation has been opened into reports a man was injured in Fort Simpson on Friday after a Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) officer shot at an “aggressive” bear.

Mounties were called to assist the officer in tracking the bear, which police say posed a safety threat, according to a news release issued Saturday afternoon.

The ENR officer, responding to the bear’s “aggressive behaviour,” shot at the animal. A man then reported he’d been injured as a “result of the discharge,” states the news release.

The individual was transported to Yellowknife’s Stanton Territorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The bear was later located and destroyed, say police.

RCMP are continuing to investigate the incident.
