RCMP responding to a home in Willow Flats for an unrelated incident came across about 50 cannabis plants.

According to the police, the marijuana plants ranged in size from six inches to six feet.

One adult male was arrested and released on a court appearance notice where he faced a charge of cultivation of marijuana.

Under the Narcotic Control Act, the offense carried a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.

Yellowknife pilots would have to wait a bit longer for a new float base.

The city development committee recommended a request to establish a float plane base on Kam Lake be deferred until the planning division developed a policy on waterfront leases within city limits.

According to Carol Ames, the head of the city's Planning and Lands Department, the policy was due to be in place by the end of September.

The Yellowknife Flying Club wanted to establish the new float plane base to ease traffic on Great Slave Lake.

It was a special day for the city as the RCMP's G Division headquarters was officially opened.

Mounties dressed in iconic red serge uniforms along with hundreds of city residents turned out to sing O Canada and God Save the Queen during the opening ceremony. Afterwards RCMP officers took members of the public on tours of the new building.

Chief Supt. Ross Grimmer, who was leaving to serve in Bosnia, handed over the reins of command to Supt. Bill Sweeney.

More than 50 kids, parents and friends showed up at the Wade Hamer Mini Golf tournament to enjoy hot dogs, burgers and bannock. Some mad inukshuks, others got their faces painted and a few even played a rounds of mini golf.

The Centre for Northern Families held the kid-friendly event and raised more than $290 for charitable projects such as the Advocacy Program and the Healthy Baby Club.
