The fire department was called to Giant Mine bunkhouse number seven after someone fell asleep with a burning cigarette and ignited the floor near his bed.
The fire was extinguished before firemen arrived. Damage was estimated at $100.
The fire alarm sounded three times later that night in the same bunkhouse but each case was a prank.

City council had approved the intersection of Taylor Road and Franklin Avenue as the site for the new fire hall.
Council had previously designated McNiven/Franklin Avenue, near the Yellowknife Community Arena, as the site for the new facility but in March 1988 council rescinded that motion, and the issue continued to divide council.
“I still believe based on the professional opinion of the consultants, the McNiven/Franklin Avenue site was the best site,” said Alderman Kit Spence, referring to studies commissioned by the city. “I think that's why we hired consulting engineers to give us advice.”
He added that the city should follow the recommendation that McNiven/Franklin Avenue was the best of three alternatives.
The consultants had listed Tommy Forrest Park/Franklin Avenue and Taylor Road/Franklin Avenue as second and third choices respectively for the fire hall.
The new fire hall was designed that year and construction was to be completed in 1989.

Yellowknife Mayor Dave Lovell got a quick hands on lesson in ship operations from Lt.-Comdr. Douglas Bancroft during the commissioning of the HMCS Yellowknife in Victoria, BC. The maritime coastal defence vessel was on duty conducting search and rescue, drug interdiction and mine counter measure exercises along the BC coast.

Discovery Air – which owned Yellowknife aviation companies Air Tindi and Great Slave Helicopters, as well as Discovery Mining Services – was celebrating a successful year that saw a giant spike in revenue in 2007.
Revenues in 2007 totaled $120.9 million, compared to the $47.4 million in 2006 – an increase of 61 per cent.
Their total number of hours flown also jumped to about 75,000 in 2007 from around 39,000 in 2006.
