Governor General award for volunteers

Volunteers will have their day in Ottawa when Governor General Julie Payette presents the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers to 42 recipients at Rideau Hall on April 17.Val Gendron of Fort Simpson will be one of the recipients chosen to receive a medal. Gendron has been a coach and mentor with speed skating, minor hockey and soccer through Fort Simpson athletic clubs for more than 17 years.

“She has trained the next generation of athletes in Fort Simpson, building their confidence and leadership through organized sports,” stated the news release.

The Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional achievements of Canadian volunteer in a variety of fields and pays tribute to the dedication and commitment of volunteers in communities across Canada.
