That gold was in the male category, but the Ecole Boreale team contained both girls and boys.

"We didn't have enough boys so the girls played with us," said Kim Ivanko, one of the coaches of the gold medal team.

"They were thrilled," she said of the players winning gold. "It was a lot of soccer, and they had a good time. And they came back victorious, which is always a nice feeling."

Landon Bowker, a member of the team, won his first gold at a soccer tournament.

"It was kind of easy because our games were like 10 to nothing," he said.

Ecole Boreale teams won more medals at the tournament.

Three teams won bronze – the Under-12, the Under-16 and the Under-19 female team.

Another team made up of players from Ecole Boreale and Fort Resolution's Deninu School won gold in the Under-16 division.

"In total, we won five banners," said Ivanko.

Ecole Boreale was the only Hay River school to send teams to the tournament.
