A change is underway in the management of recreation with the Town of Hay River.

Recreation and community services director Jim Darby worked his last day with the town on March 27.

Judy Goucher, the senior administrative officer (SAO) with the town, noted Darby's departure at the council meeting that night.

"Starting tomorrow I will be acting director of recreation and community services along with SAO until our new assistant SAO starts on May 1," said Goucher.

That new assistant SAO will be Glenn Smith, currently the director of information technology with the Northwest Territories Power Corporation.

Smith will also serve as director of recreation and community services for a year, after which someone will be hired for that position.

Mayor Brad Mapes said Smith will be a "great fit" for the Town of Hay River.

"He's very community-driven and connected, and he's a go-getter," said Mapes. "He's going to be a great plus to our team. And moving forward our town is going to be busy and we need someone like that."

Smith has been active in the community in a number of capacities, particularly with sports organizations. For example, he is involved in fastpitch and the curling club, and recently was the IT chair with the 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games.

The Hub unsuccessfully attempted to contact Smith last week for comments on his new upcoming roles with the town.

Mapes thanked Darby for his time with the town.

"Jim did a great job," he said. "He decided to move on. I wish him all the best. He brought a lot of new ideas for our community."

Darby became the director of recreation and community services in February of last year.
